The Prattville Christian Academy collected over 3000 dollars to help the WWII Veterans fly to Washington to visit their memorial. They're fifth and sixth graders that really feel the benefit of the American Freedom and they wanted to be part of America. The school invited the Veterans to speak to the classes. They were small children with big, serious questions about the Country and WWII.
Frank Hartley, the veteran in the yellow shirt ans Scott Ward, the guardian to the veteran were their answer. It was a very emotional meeting for all, children, tachers and spectators. Tears wet few faces. There will be another meeting in a public school that required the presence of veterans. Those are childre who realize the value of the veterans and connect their good, easy life to the veteran's death (over one half million buried in Washington plus thousands world wide), and to the few live veteran's who saw the horrors of that war and bare the scars of it.
Frank Hartley had a very good closing. "The war is not like what you see in the movies. There is no music, just explosions and hopes to stay alive."
The classroom was very interested and attentive. They welcomed the veteran's answers with glee, clapping their hands and cheering with thanks.
A young fellow asked a direct question. "Did you ever kill anyone?" The veteran very nicely explained that during war time you get shot and you shoot. You really never know if you kill anyone directly. The only think you can be sure of is that you are still alive, even though you are hurt".
A book depecting detailed pictures of the WWII Memorial was passed around. Children turned the pages talking to each other, admiring the monument and passed the book from row to row. A book of pictures of the Veterans taken in Washington were passed around and they generated new questons of interest.
Time to say thank you and good-bye. Some of the children came to shake the veteran's hand and some hugged him and thanking him for his courage to fight so they could enjoy a good life.
