http://www.tinahasit.com/tfol/20100316.txt My home town in Italy was a very small town. Our city hall had only four employees. Grand mother's was the only eatery in town and the four city hall clerk came to eat there every day for lunch. Italy was on the process of rebuilding after the war. We still had the out house. Progress was slow but people were happy. Remember they had an open roof movie theatre. We went up on the roof to watch the movies. One evening they were playing "Bathing beauties" (Bellezze al bagno) starring Esther Williams. Grand father got so excited looking at the legs of the stars that fell off the roof and broke his leg. We children laughed at his naive'ness but were strongly reprehended because instead of laughing we should have been concerned about grand father. The old man's fall ruined the rest of the evening for us and were forbidden to go up on the roof to watch the movies for fifteen days. That really hurt us. When the family finally built an inside bathroom, they built attached to the kitchen with two entrance doors, one from the kitchen and the other from the outside. There was a big window next to the outside door and it was left half open all the time. Remember once a young fellow city employee was acting up to show off his ability to balance only on the back legs of his chair. He fell backward and hit the bathroom door opening it wide. Grand mother was sitting on the throne and without getting at all exited she asked the boy "Do you need anything else?" That added to young fellow shame whose face was already red as a tomato. Those little events will never live my mind and I treasure them as part of my happy childhood.
